Outside Jobs!

Hi!!
Well… all day yesterday it looked light twilight! So dark and gloomy!
Today was the polar opposite with lovely sunshine and clear skies!
I figured that I should be getting back into some work. If I don’t have a plan I won’t get through anything.
I am hoping to do a small section of weeding and cut and split a few more of those fence palings, if not daily, then close to it. I also have vague plans of making sure I cook one batch of something out of the freezer per week to lessen the population in there of tomatoes, raspberries, plums and chillies

Its easy to get overwhelmed by all the work needed to be done. Also easy to think I will put in a big day and do heaps of gardening.
I erred on the side of sensible and picked one nice modest patch that needed attention.

I’ll add to my list of Things To Do a trip to the beach for seaweed. This needs to be ‘bedded down’ with newspaper and topped with seaweed so the weeds won’t come back so quickly.
All the garden stakes should be stored somewhere dry so I can reuse them next season

I reluctantly left the garden, brought up a load of firewood then got the tools out to cut/split kindling

Remembering how much my bottom hurt last time I sat on the besser block splitting kindling, I found an old rug and padded things up somewhat!

I don’t think I overdid things today, but I am a little tired tonight!

Yesterday I made a bunch of tags for my berets and finally took them down to the local handcraft shop in the hope that I will sell a few

Strawberries and cream coloured?

I think this new one below is real wool but have no idea where I picked it up from. Its really cosy.

Then last night I stayed up until stupid o’clock learning something new to crochet on youtube!

Eventually it will beĀ  a blanket! I bought some new yarn to do it in today – sticking with some specific colours. I made a start on it tonight and its rather fun to do!

Anyway, back to the couch and fire for me!
Cheers!

Panning

Hello! Well, todays weather was quite revolting… dark, grey and raining – and lets not forget the wind!
Jeff was still keen to go panning for sapphires, and I was keen not to be stuck in the house all day.
The secret panning spot is a pretty little area.

Even though it was hard to see in the grey light and raining a bit, it was fun to pan through several lots of dirt to see what we could find!

Jeff sieves out the larger rocks and then we pan through the smaller stuff

I only wandered a short way to see what else interesting was in the bush.

Back home we sorted our treasures and panned through some extra sand that Jeff brought back.
Lots of zircon, some hematite, and a good number of little sapphire chips!
I’ll have to take photo with a coin or something for scale. They are all quite small, but we enjoyed the hunt!

I hope your day was full of treasures as well!
Cheers

Love the pretty blues! Interesting with the greens, purple and yellow too.

Rocks

Hello! Hope everyone has a great Monday!
I went back to the doc today – most of my bloodwork all hunky-dory. Calcium behaving, not coeliac (YAY) but I do have a permanent condition which stops B12 from being absorbed into my system, so its lifelong injections for me!
I wasn’t distressed. I was too busy being pleased about not being coeliac. (Higher chance for me with my Mum having it and one of my sisters!)
I do love my fresh baked bread VERY much!!

So – life returning to ‘normal’ here in Tasmania.
I do have some obligations at the court house mid June with a Jury Duty summons, but I think we have run out of guests!!

I’m pretty sure I need to start writing lists again. There is a swag of jobs I want to start getting stuck into. They are all running amok in my head so its time to put them firmly on paper then I can start to prioritise what comes first!

By the way, all the photos are just some of the rock photos I have taken over the last few days. I thought they were pretty.

Today we also went ‘into town’ (Burnie) to do a few things. I really needed a new food processor as my little ‘Gee-Whizzer’ broke! I felt a bit sad about that but boy, has it ever done some work over the last 10 years!! Not bad!
I looked at some yarn but nothing tickled my fancy.
I also stocked up on bread flour.
So all in all, fairly mundane.

I finished off another couple of berets today – must make some labels and get them into the local hand-made shop. They will sell better than sitting in a bag in our lounge room!

I think tomorrow morning we are going down to pan for sapphires! The weather is a bit dodgy so will wait and see how horrible it looks before fully committing!
Hope your week starts brilliantly!
Cheers!

Overland – Day Six

Hi! Getting on to the last couple of days of our hike!
The night was spent in the rather large Bert Nichols Hut.

The eating area was huge – but no heating so everyone remained fairly rugged up for the nights feasting.

Fiona and I slept in the cave down the bottom!

This platform area is great for viewing the mountains… when its not clouded over like this morning!
Anyway… here’s a slightly dodgy photo of a few of us finally putting on those cold socks and boots and getting ready for the jaunt down to the final hut.

Day six is a much easier hike than the rest of the trek. 9km in a gradual descent to Narcissus.

At this point, you can really feel you are on your way home.
There are still a few creeks to cross, but nothing so dramatic as we had previously encountered

We’d occasionally break out into the more open forests with the taller trees.

Then back into the darker moss covered bush

It was turning out to be a lovely day… no pack covers today!

Even after 6 days, I still can’t help stopping to snap a few more fungi photos

Yup… we are on day six!

Despite the great weather, there is always a good chance (or three) to muddy up the boots again

Crossroads

This is the part of the track where you now may meet walkers coming up from Lake St Clair. Beyond this point in the hiking season is a no go – the Overland is one way and you need a permit.
Often people will hike up to Pine Valley and over the Acropolis. This is actually where Fiona’s husband Paul was. He and a friend were doing a couple of days hike then the plan was they would meet us at the end so we had a ride home.

Martin, Angela and Paul caught up to us here and we all enjoyed a sit down and snack in the gorgeous sunshine.

Onward! (After yesterdays efforts I was quite nervous watching Fiona balance on anything!!)

Still a few wet paths to slosh through

So far so good… Fiona hasn’t fallen over today! šŸ™‚

Finding good huggable trees

Its hard to believe that a few days ago we were fighting our way through severe wind, rain, snow and blizzards!

Such an awesome feeling!

Thanks Mark for taking this photo!!

When you reach the bridge you know you are getting close to the hut!

Not far from Narcissus we met our first deadly creature! A beautiful tiger snake who was enjoying the sunshine as much as we were! It was in no hurry to relinquish its spot in the sun either! Finally it slithered off and we continued on.

Narcissus was a quaint little hut – tiny compared to the hut the night before!

I dashed down to the jetty just in time to say goodbye to a good number of our hiking buddies who were taking the ferry across Lake St Clair and finishing up their Overland Adventure

It was a magical afternoon – we sat in the sun outside the hut and lunched with Angela (who shared some of her soup) Paul and Martin. It was blissful relaxing and chatting – nobody was in a hurry to do anything that afternoon!

Down on the jetty, Adam and Mark brought out the vodka – I tell you, that was warming all the way down!

Pretty sure Fiona is just relaxing and not passed out or anything…

As for me? I am all about style when it comes to evening wear on hiking trips!

It was so enjoyable watching the sun go down.

Our last night on the track!
It was probably one of the best nights! There was some funny conversation over dinner (confessions of how many pairs of undies everyone brought along and how much toilet paper people were left with!!!)
Many of us stayed up much later than normal (until 7.30pm!!!) out on the helipad watching for shooting stars! We finally saw a brilliant one scratch its way across the heavens. Feeling fulfilled, we were able to troop off to bed – but not before everyone went on a frantic food barricading mission as we read on the noticeboard there was a marauding mouse in that hut.
I think some of us were awake during the night on ‘mousewatch’ as the enterprising rodent managed to eat its way into a few things!
Ahhhh – the joys of bushwalking!
Finally to sleep and ready to tackle our final day!

Cheers

Eclectic Snaps

Sometimes the Universe wants to know why??

Hello! How is everyone’s weekend going? Hope you are having a great time! We are enjoying trundling up and down the local coastline with our friends and returning in the evenings to relax in front of the fire!

We enjoyed some time in the sun at Fossil Bluff, then drove over Table Cape where we found the perfectly plowed paddock! So beautiful!

Then a stroll up Sister’s Beach

Sophie and Michael enjoying their relaxing few days in Tasmania!

A closer look at the lichens

Little bit of coral

Today we went to Stanley and climbed The Nut… but we also went down to the base along the wharf for a different view!

Leftovers from times past

Michael couldn’t resist a bit of fun with the seagulls and the last of our chips… I was on hand to snap the bedlam.

Sadly the light disappears all too quickly these days. Time to head home!

Hope your weekend is fabulous!
Cheers

Sunset over The Nut, Stanley.

Friends and Waterfalls

Hello – My first real lengthy day out in a while!
So lovely to see my school friend Sophie and meet her husband Michael today! They are doing a quick trip in Tassie – only here until Sunday!

Today we collected them at the airport and went off to Liffey Falls for a walk and a picnic!

Its a beautiful area down there – World Natural Heritage Area – huge ‘man ferns’ and pretty falls.

Its a nice leisurely walk down to the bottom of the falls and not too taxing going back up again!

Fluffy fungi

I actually expected to see more water over the falls, but I guess we really haven’t had that much rain up this way since I was on the hike.

Anyway, bedtime for me! Planning to visit some local beaches tomorrow!

Cheers

Little Bit of Garden

Hello all! Happy Mid-Week!
I was a bit slow today – probably in shock from vacuuming yesterday.
Still, a walk in the garden, a trip to the shops and a few barrow loads of firewood moved up to the back door and that wakes you up.

I also baked a cake as we are expecting visitors tomorrow!

My fennel is looking pretty great! Pity I haven’t ever used it in cooking before. Another ‘gunna’ job to look up non-scary recipes to try it out.
I just like the way it grows where it pleases and thrives.

I can’t tell you how much I am longing to throw myself into my garden. In among the weeds and scruffiness, the herbs are happily doing their thing.

I have four or five beautiful thyme plants. I think it should be next on my list to dry.

I have parsley like some people have lawn.

The lemon balm has well and truly seeded and more young plants are popping up. Does anyone make tea out of this? I haven’t used this in my cooking either, but its another plant I love just having in the herb garden.

The oregano is also doing so well… I need to cut back all the old stuff
I accidentally pulled a bit up – reminded me that I need to get in and pot lots of it, nurture it and sell it on my street stall in spring.

An easy enough task since it pulls up roots and all…

New Home

Anyway – I have an early start tomorrow, so best make my way towards bed!
Hope you all have a great day!
Cheers

The Rosemary is a mass of flowers!

Varied Day – Getting Better!

I can tell I am on the mend. Apart from my appetite returning and lots more energy… I also snapped off about 60 photos of various things that were happening today. Iron clad proof that I am getting better!

Like our sapphires? Jeff was let into a secret spot to do some gemstone fossicking!Ā  I didn’t go because I classed it under ‘Possibly Overdoing It’ but Jeff brought me home some sand to pan and it was great! Found a couple of the above sapphires.

The creek is fullĀ  of zircon and hematiteĀ  – although some have looked at the photos and also suggested garnet but will have to look into that.

There are all just tiny scraps but so pretty!

Then I started on a long long long overdue job – turning Ruby’s old fence palings into kindling!

Out with the saw horses and power tools!
Also a mallet and splitter

I did a good number without going mad and split quite a few

Our kindling box was looking a bit grim

Much better – just have to get back out there more regularly to work through those palings and get them out of the way. They looks so rubbishy hanging around!

Pip whinged for ages about coming outside. So I opened the door – and he walked away. I closed the door, he returned and looked sad. I opened the door… he walked off… If you own a cat, you’ll get this!! Eye Roll.
Eventually I just grabbed him and suited him up in his harness and took him for a walk

I thought it was time to introduce him to our new chooks
There was initial shock as they all stood stock still, necks stretched up watching our every move!

Then they sought safety in numbers with the older girls

Curiosity got the better of a couple of braver ones who returned for a closer look…

Then, for no reason, they thought something was going to eat them so all six sprinted up the other side of the yard! (Chickens are hilarious when they are running flat out)

Meanwhile the older girls are like ‘meh’

Clearly the show was over the other side, and soon everyone was together to stare at Pip

Pip stared back

One of the young birds did a lot of walking back and forth a lot closer… she was curious but didn’t come all the way over.

Pip eventually gave me that ‘look’ which probably meant it was time to get back to the comfort of a couch and fire

I finished up by snapping a few shots of the autumn leaves as the colours are so deep and pretty – even if they are past their best!

Cheers!

New Beret

I made something for ME!

Mum bought me an early Christmas Present! šŸ™‚ This lovely hand spun/dyed wool. So I have turned it into a beret – even wore it out today to test it in the gloomy cold weather! Its rather cosy!
I am hoping to make gloves out of whats left.

I did get down to the market to buy wheat and straw for our chooks. We also had Fiona and her two boys in tonight for dinner and a movie – was lots of fun! (And yes Mum – if you are reading this I also did some resting!!)

I had a lovely visit from our friend Maureen the other day, who brought a plate of fresh baked/made Kiss Biscuits (cookies)
And oh my! Aren’t they super??? mmmm Managed to get a quick snap before we gutsed them all

Time to put Pip to bed and make a move to my own pillow šŸ™‚

Hope your Sunday was restful/fun.
Cheers

Why not a quick selfie with Pip?

Day Five – Waterfalls & Fungi

Hi there! Find a comfy chair and grab a cuppa. I failed to whittle the photos down very far. This might be quite the ramble!

Well… we made it to day five – and didn’t the morning start beautifully! Almost clear blue skies! The ranger came into the hut the night before to give us the updated weather reports and the fellow got a hearty round of applause and cheers as the bringer of good weather news!

Even though a number of the hikers had camped the night before, it was still chaotic in the small hut finding gear and getting ready to go… not to mention getting those wet socks and boots back on. Actually I treated myself to clean socks this day. I knew they’d be wet in no time, but the other ones were… well, I’ll let your imagination do the work.

It was always a good feeling to get the packs back on and be on our way each morning. And with the sun shining, today was no exception.

Of course, there were no shortages of mud puddles to navigate!

Some mudholes were still iced over too

Everywhere we looked the sun was streaming in. Put everyone in quite a good mood!

The first main stop (if you like to stop) was the Du Cane Hut.
Its the oldest remaining hut in the National Park, built in 1910 by a man named Patrick Hartnett, from split King Billy Pine shingles and was still used up into the 1970’s.

Its an interesting place to go into and see how spoiled we are with the new huts!! Loads of character though!

A different sort of visitors book I guess!

Inhabited by hairy multi-legged individuals (That’s an educated guess)

Conveniently, if a call of nature should arise… follow the sign.

Yup – thats a hand carved toilet lid over a hollowed out stump. And according to some of the more adventurous hikers in our group who bravely lifted the lid – still in use!!

We found Leah, Austin, Skye and Kelvin in a prime morning tea spot. They had hot beverages on the go and were soaking up the sun in a most beautiful spot.
Fiona kind of shattered their peace a little when she rocked up to say hi and put her pack down – discovered a bulge in her shirt/top and surprised herself (and everyone else) by flinging about a pair of undies she had somehow stored there!!!! (I have been assured they were clean ones… ) šŸ˜€

Anyway – we forged on, looking for the first waterfall turnoff track.

We really enjoyed putting the packs down and walking (floating) on down to see the falls. We figured that after all the rain and snow, they would be a bit spectacular.

I think today I really started missing my other camera lenses. Next trip I will make room for a lot more gear and make space in my walking schedule to stop a lot more to get particular photos. (Probably will have to do it alone! haha)

There were a few minor waterfalls to walk over on the way down.

There was a LOT more water compared to the last time we were there!

The roar of the falls was impressive as was the water it was kicking up! We got a bit soggy standing there

We left the din behind to move on to the second falls.

I started missing my macro lens

But then, as we dragged ourselves away from the fungi and mosses, we reached Fergusson Falls at exactly the right moment.

Spectacular!!
Its actually hard to see these falls properly without clambering down and around which didn’t seem safe, but I was more than thrilled with the light rays beaming down to pretty everything up!

It was a bit hard to leave

Back to the fungi…

So many and so varied!

I like the way these little orange ones lined the path!

We broke out of the forests again and set off down to Hartnett Falls – sans packs

This was the place we lay down on rocks last hike! Water a little deeper this time!

We found the perfect picnic spot right on the lip of the falls, sitting on an old tree!

I nearly ate it all before I remembered the photo!!

Such a wonderful place to sit and rest!

Of course, rest can’t last forever on the Overland, so we set off to the base of the falls

The track down is much improved since I was here a year ago… still steep, but there are two fairly deep spots in the river to get across.
Our gaiters were worth their weight in gold!

Even though we couldn’t go far up the river this time, I think the views from below are just as rewarding.

Then we dunked our heads in the water to give them a scrub – so refreshing!!!

It was like a little fairyland down here with all the moss, water, ferns and fungi

Sadly, what goes down (us) has to go back up again (us)

Time to sling those packs back on and head towards our next hut – The Burt Nichols hut at Windy Ridge.

There was a fair bit of ‘up’ to manage before reaching the Du Cane Gap.

A lot of tree roots and boulders to skip across

And of course, mud.

Occasionally we would get a bit of boardwalk reprieve!

There are very few signs on the track. This one was most welcome. It basically says ‘You will be going downhill now’

And downhill we went.

Then in one heart-stopping moment, Fiona took a fall! She was navigating those tree roots and boulders when a misstep caused her pack to shift and throw her off balance

OK – yes I took a photo.
However… it went like this:
Me: “Are you alright, are you ok?” (panic panic)
Fiona: (Muffled with head in a rock) “I’m ok I’m ok… I just can’t get up”
Me: “I am coming down, I just can’t run”
Fiona: (Still muffled) “Take a photo!!”
Me: “Um… OK” (Snaps one hurried shot and takes pack off so I can properly rescue my poor cousin!)

Very very luckily, Fiona only hit her head slightly and with some effort, we got her pointing back up the right way. She later discovered a nice bruise on her leg, but we were more worried about the knock on the head, which thankfully wasn’t so bad.
She hadn’t packed her pack so well that morning and the pack itself didn’t seem set right. There was a LOT of play in it that day, which isn’t great for hiking on uneven ground!

We found the funny tree with its massive burl and Fiona decided to give it a hug (we are tree huggers after all haha)

The track got less tricky and the amount of fungi and lichen seemed to increase!

And for Fiona’s final trick of the day, she slipped on a bit of wet wood over a small stream crossing, her pack threw her off again and I looked back to see her pole dancing with a sapling over the creek!!!
I just took the photo from the hip as I dashed forward to complete my second rescue of the day!!

Glad the sapling was sturdy! That would have been a cold soggy end to the day!

We finally made it (in one piece) to the hut to find most of our fellow hikers on the lookout platform admiring the sun setting, and catching up on the days events!
Time to get our beds made, get clean sleeping gear on and dinner in our bellies!

A really wonderful days adventure!
Cheers
