Burning Stuff

Hiya!
First of all… note the blue skies.
Second… a cardigan update!
I got Jeff to take a few snaps so you could see how it was progressing! My its cosy!!  I went back to Spotlight (yarn shop) and picked up some similar yarn in burgundy to trim the edges.
There is actually enough of this yarn in their ‘throwout’ box to make another one and I am quite tempted to dash back to secure it!

I hope you dig my stylish gumboots.

I actually have the second sleeve finished as of tonight and almost both of them trimmed in the red because I couldn’t wait to see what it would look like.

Anyway, thats enough catwalk stuff.

We went out this morning to the markets because Jeff really wanted to buy some rocks. There is a good stall at the Penguin Markets which is selling heaps of amazing rocks.
We also managed to find this fabulous tall set of drawers… which is still in the car because we got distracted this afternoon.

As it wasn’t raining and the sun was doing its best, we really wanted to get into some more yard clearing. The wind wasn’t nice though… but you can’t have everything! 😀
Remember those free besser blocks I picked up a while back? Well I have made use of them to create a temporary fire pit to start burning off all the scrappy bits of tree that we can’t use for firewood or kindling.

It’s a slight challenge burning green stuff – but there is plenty of dry material around to help things along. The wind was blowing down the paddock way so the smoke (and there was plenty!) was blown away from the highway.

Jeff spent a lot of time chopping and hacking away at decent branches to add to the kindling pile

Seems a lot already and we have barely scratched the surface!

I even dragged Pip out for a short while – he found a suitable spot to snoopervise.

I got through about half of this pile today – plus a lot of other stuff.

Such a mess!

For the first time in forever, we worked outside until it was dark!! Felt so good to be getting some stuff done!

Its great to have a spot set up now that either of us can just go and use to whittle away at that pile of wood. Plus my parents are visiting in a couple of weeks… er… less I think… and my Mum is a closet pyromaniac so she is going to love being out there burning scraps!

I hope your Sunday was as much fun!
Cheers

Out For A Walk

Its really way past time to stop being a sook about the weather and just get back out there before I become too wide for my new cardigan that isn’t even finished yet!
The wind was a bit icy today, but we got about 2/3rds the way around before being rained on. So not bad.

I really felt the results of my winter slothing on the first hill especially.

Seems like a few other people braved the weather today to come down to the beach

Lots of runoff from the hills to be seen today.

I have grand plans of doing this more often but… we shall see. Its too easy to get comfortable in front of the fire when the wind and rain are continuously howling!
Still… it felt good to be out in the fresh air and getting a bit of a leg stretch!
Hope everyone is having a lovely weekend!
Cheers!

Cabbages and Crochet

End of the week, but not the end of the rain!
Its still pouring down, even as I type tonight.

Pip spends a lot of time sensibly snugged up in blankets.

There was a short time this afternoon where the rain left off so I ducked outside to see if the chooks were paddling about and give them some food, stock up on firewood, collect the eggs plus I also jumped the back fence to go pick up another bag of pine cones

I also hunted up a fresh cabbage as I made a stir fry for dinner tonight. Nice to have a couple of fresh things left in the garden.

I spent most of my free time today continuing on my crochet project of a hooded cardigan

From this snap you can see how the folded hexagon shape (the star) creates one half of the cardigan.
Tonight I have sewn up the sleeves, added the hood and now lengthening both the sleeves and the overall length with whatever yarn I have left. Its heavy and cosy.
I don’t want to go to bed. I want to keep working on it!! I have never made something so big thats wearable. Bit keen to finish!

Anyway… Pip continues to snore in his blanket… I am heading back to the couch
Hope everyone has an awesome weekend planned
Cheers

Bits and Bobs, Odds and Sods

Hello!
Was so pleased to get a day with more blue skies and only a spit of rain!
Apart from cleaning up the kitchen, I did manage to get outside.
I am also still tussling with our service provider as we are still not connected by our usual internet or phone. Still on backup.
Not that I am surprised. The first time I had an issue they called me and suggested I move to a more cost efficient plan, I agreed and they promptly removed us from our original plan then proceeded not to put us onto the new promised plan and our bills doubled. That  only took 7 months to sort out.
The last time we had ‘an issue’ (which was a veritable soap opera of events) we were being moved onto the NBN network. They cut our original connections and failed to reconnect to the NBN. oh and sent us outrageous bills every month as well. Thats the super in a nutshell short version of the drama. That took ELEVEN MONTHS to sort out.
Since today I had unsurprisingly heard nothing back about their failure to reconnect us I got back on to their online help chat. (to go over everything AGAIN). Informed specialist team would email me by 6pm (within 3 hours)(Which was after the usual drama I cause by not having a mobile phone)
Of course by 6.30pm I have heard…. nothing.
Back to the info line to go over everything (again)… was informed that they were emailing now.
When? Within 30 minutes. Its been an hour and let me put on my surprised face – No contact.
Time to start investigating new carriers. I persisted with them before because of all the hassle I just wanted my money back and compensation out of them which I got but figured it would be harder if I left them to squeeze something out of them.
So… hopefully this backup connection keeps us somewhat online.

On to much more relaxing, fun and pretty topics!
Flowers!! The paddock behind us is looking rather cheerful!

If the weather isn’t too dramatic tomorrow I am tempted to go cut bunches of these to put out the front to sell!

I went and helped myself to a huge bunch the other day (The fellow that manages the paddocks doesn’t mind)

Really helps cheer things up when the days are mostly grey

Yay – the chooks are doing well lately! Lovely to have lots of eggs again!

I haven’t used peat pots before but thought I would give them a go. Probably try to grow stuff in them to sell out the front. (The Grand Plan)

Speaking of selling out the front, the potted garlic are doing fine!

The early garlic are going along pretty well too and the seaweed has suppressed a lot of weeds.

A few shoots have been nibbled off in the other plot!!

I found three spare bags of seaweed so I spread them out on this plot. Didn’t quite cover all of it!

In times of nice weather I have been trying to tidy up the raspberry patch

The whole area is going to get a revamp! We want to take out the poles and just get more of the big polypipe and steel droppers to create the arches all the way along to put the nets over. Will look much neater and have a lot more headspace.
The whole thing needs moving across a little so Jeff can mow down the sides. Not that with the tree down we can get the mower down the back anyway.

We also want to build a small wall around it (maybe a foot or so high) to attach the netting too rather than on the ground where the grass grows into it. This makes perfect sense in my head. Hopefully in real life it will work the way I envision.

Anyway, I am slowly working through the tangled canes to cut out the dead ones and prune back the live ones.

In the background, I still have herbs drying. I picked some more today to put in the netting. Just thyme and parsley.

Its a slow process but rather satisfying filling up the little jars

I started a new crochet project too. I found a sale of factory ends and fancied this fluffy green yarn… so bought 5 bags of it (About 20 balls)
I had grand visions of making a hooded cardigan

I an onto the second ‘star’ now and will have to take some snaps to show you how it all goes. Its quite easy and clever! (I adore video tutorials!)

Each day there are more and more blossoms bursting out on the cherry-plum tree!

Hope everyone has had a lovely day!
Cheers!

Japan – Fushimi Inari

Hi!
I have managed to finally find a bit of time to start post processing the photographs from Japan from last November!! I can’t believe its taken me this long to get onto them!

Fushimi Inari-taisha is one of my favourite places in Kyoto… it was nice to take my parents there to show them.
As usual we had to wade through a ton of tourists!

Fushimi Inari – taisha is the head shrine of the god Inari.
Inari is the god of rice, but merchants and businesses have also worshipped Inari as the patron of business.

I took about 10 photos of my parents right here and they pulled faces in every one!! You’d think I would have them trained better by now!!
This was the best…

I really love the bold colours

The main shrine was built in 1499 but the earliest structures were build in 711!!

The foxes are usually depicted holding either a key or a jewel in their mouths

The best thing about Fushimi Inari are the tunnels of tori that wind their way up the mountain.

About 10,ooo of these can be found along the main path.
Each one donated by a business or someone who wants a wish granted by the gods

I have never had a chance to walk the full length of the shrine and hillside so its on my list for our next trip!

The further in/up you go the less tourists you get. So many people just come to gawk quickly at the main areas and bustle off again. I prefer to take some time and wander up and around and find some of those little forgotten tranquil areas.

Large bundles of brightly coloured origami cranes are found hanging at some of the shrines

Its a great place to walk through as you never know what you might find around the corner!

It’s a lovely day out and I highly recommend you put it on your list if you are travelling to Japan!

Cheers

Did You Miss Me?

Hi there!!
Sorry I just disappeared on you all! Have been without phone or internet for a week or so. (That’s like extreme survival in todays society isn’t it??)
Our service provider has killed something and its not coming back to life very quickly.
Oh, and apparently you can’t do anything unless you call them. They don’t allow for those of us left who don’t have mobile phones.
We got sent a new modem and of course it didn’t help with the overall issue but its redeeming feature is a sim card that accesses the internet via mobile (or something) so we have limited connection.
Still working on the phone and the proper internet connection. Have been using Kirrilys mobile tonight to talk to the tech people… who keep telling me how they will call me back tomorrow. Amazing how people can’t grasp the concept of “We Have No Mobile Phone”
Challenges challenges

Anyway… things have changed very little here. Its still permanently twilight and still raining. There is a severe weather warning out for the next 24 hours so will be watching those trees nervously!

I have been trying to take it easy since the international students left last week. I was pretty tired out from that escapade. Not sure I would do it again. To be honest – I didn’t enjoy it all that much. It was uphill work the whole way and more like extreme babysitting rather than the cultural exchange we were hoping for.
I think they were just too young socially to really appreciate and embrace the opportunity they had here. They never got excited or verbally appreciated anything from the food to the outings – I constantly had to ask “did you like…” I’d get a yes but nothing more. The lack of enthusiasm was tedious.
And if it was up to me I would have thrown their mobile phones in the ocean!! Even on a ‘modern kid’ scale, it was just ridiculous.
So… it was an experience. There was obviously a lot more to it that I won’t go into minute details, but I was disappointed as it felt a bit like a failure, but I know we tried. Their goodbye letters were sweet as they finally let us know all the things they enjoyed, but it would have been so much better if they had made the effort to interact with us more rather than spend all their time either on the phone or in the bathroom.
I cannot explain about our recent hot water bill. Best not dwell.

So life is back to being a bit quiet. Trying to get some direction and find some motivation among the dark weather.
We had to palliate a chook this week. Sadly we lost our speckled ‘pink chook’ She was just old and it was her time. Her last couple of days were being fed on a bed of comfy straw inside in the cat carrier in the warm house.
The other girls are laying eggs like champions and I am able to start supplying family again with them.

Pip is on a diet of wallaby mince and he is vacuuming it up like nothing else! Its seems to be suiting his problematic digestive system.
Plus he is jumping up on really tall things a lot… hmmm

Hopefully I will be back again soon with more regular posts if this tenuous connection holds out!
Cheers

Some Sunshine!

A bit of a chance to sneak outside today and get that remaining wood stacked and under cover!
The girls were off on a school trip to Cradle Mt where they got to see snow for the first time!
Unfortunately, at this time of year, not much time is available to really have a decent amount of time up there to experience it, but they seem to have enjoyed themselves anyway. (Basically I think they did 4 hours of bus travelling and 3 hours at Cradle!)

This pile of wood wasn’t getting any drier out here, so it was great to be able to work outside for a while and get it all stacked.

Look what I found!! Plum blossoms!
The promise of spring??

Its a bit exciting seeing things start up again… even though I know we have a while to go

I sat Pip outside for a while so he could photosynthesis for a while

The other night when I went to a gathering for hosts and students I spotted a fab bit of driftwood on the beach so Kirrily and I exited stage left from dinner and snaffled it, popped it in the car then went back to socialise. 🙂

Cousin Jeff has been dropping off pallets for us which is awesome! I plan to use them to create the new garden fence.

Another bag popped into existence…  mostly did it last night but finished it off today. Nobody is going to want it though because I tested it to see if it fit big (unimpressed) cats inside…

Anyway, I promised the troops hamburgers tonight so I better get cooking!
Have a great day/evening

Cheers

Just Another Day

Hi there!
Not much terribly exciting happened today.
It rained (a lot) (again) and I ran about like a maniac getting things done while the girls were at school.
Their laundry – keeping the fire going to get it all dry, baked them a cake because the school is taking them to Cradle Mt tomorrow and I wanted to pack something extra in their lunch.
Hopefully they will get to see some snow…

I also baked the chooks a cake – with a very peculiar mix of ingredients.
There were a few eggs that had been cracked in the nest that I didn’t want to risk eating – shells and all.
Some leftover cat food. Some dodgy yoghurt.
Some oats, flour, old cereal, bacon rinds, some cooking fat…
Thats all I can remember. A completely horrific mix that the chickens went wild over!!! Don’t have to be a great cook to please the feathery friends, thats for sure!

And in the background of life, I am still crocheting a bit in the evening, so I snapped a photo of the latest bags.
Sadly the yarn I was buying for this suddenly disappeared from the shop.
Time to move on to new designs soon!

Hope your day was lovely!
Cheers

Sisters Beach

Hello!
Was a busy and tiring weekend. I won’t go into my torturous time shopping – haha.  Clearly I am not built for shops.
I escaped with Jeff late Saturday for a short hike in the pouring rain that everyone else sensibly declined.

Since Sunday was the last full free day we had with the girls we planned to go to Sister’s Beach, rain, hail or shine.

It was a bit overcast, but the rain held off – indeed and it even became sunny by the afternoon!

The sea was really foamy, so Peggy and I had some fun jumping in foam puddles

We came across a group of girls that were having a brilliant time having a foam fight and were covered in the stuff!
Peggy got her photo taken with them and did a couple of selfies which the girls were totally happy to pose for! (They are all going to need to be hosed off before being allowed in the house again haha)

As usual… the beach shows its artistic side with sand scribbles, rocks, sponges, driftwood etc etc

Jeff amused himself by making ‘stuff’ out of grass stalks.
I just photographed them

The rocks are always a better colour in the damp

This rock was quite pink…

A bit of driftwood in the making was on the shores too… some buried in an interesting way – testament to the wild weather we’ve been having

The other girls dashed off to play on the swings in the playground but Peggy stuck around on the beach with us.

The sea was choppy, but we did enjoy a bit of sun and the day wasn’t very cold. A lucky break for the last Sunday

Too soon it was time to head home and prepare food to take out to a gathering of all the host families and students, which was a fun night – and good to meet a few more people!

Hope your weekend was fantastic too!
Cheers

Weeks End

Hi… bit of a goofy looking snap of me with a freshly picked cabbage!
We had the two Kinmen Island teachers over for dinner and Bens taught me how to make a Taiwan Hotpot meal.
It was pretty easy and tasty… we boiled the chicken legs in water then added things like the cabbage, tomato, pumpkin, corn, salt & the fried up onion and garlic – pretty much just whats on hand!

The meat is dipped in soy as you are eating it.

It was good for the girls having their teachers here, communication was a bit more free and easy. Probably in hindsight should have had the teachers up a bit earlier in the whole visit. 🙂

We learnt a lot more about Taiwan (as we really didn’t know much except what we googled before the girls got here.)

The weekend is meant to pour with rain. Taking them into Burnie tomorrow for a last stint at shopping and all excitement with a promise of a MacDonalds visit for lunch. (To be brutally honest I need twenty laps around Anniversary Bay before I need that cheeseburger!! yipes!)

Best get a wriggle on towards bed! Pip has gone and planted himself somewhere so I have to go find him and put him to bed then follow suit!!

Cheers!
