Hello! Start of the week again.
Desperate times at Norwich House. We were nearly out of sweet chilli sauce!
I was waiting for Jeff to get up to tell me where he stashed his handsaw so I could tackle the garden, so I started on cooking. Took me hours and never got back to the garden. A double batch takes forever and I still think its probably too runny. Oh well.
It used some chillis out of the freezer and a heap of the garlic and the house smells pretty good. Also meant that I cleaned out some of my bottles from the cupboard. (Stern words to myself for putting them away with their old labels on them so that added a heap of time to my job)
In a much less arduous task, I made up a new batch of laundry liquid.
Yesterday’s wood gathering activities were slowed up when I found a new resident in my work gloves.
It was quite at home and in no hurry to come out!
I eventually relocated him/her to a pot of parsley.
The potted garlic are looking quite happy! I am torn between planting more or just dehydrating the lot that’s left.
The rescued leek! Now will have to look up a decent recipe to make use of all of these!! I have cleaned and cut them and they are in the fridge waiting their turn!
The local gift shop hasn’t sold any of my berets, but can’t keep up with gloves! So putting a few together to try my luck there.
This pair I just finished I really like so am trying to sell via my facebook first before putting them into the shop where I will lose 30% commission. Pure wool so really cosy and I quite like the slight mismatch of them.
Anyway… will see what happens.
That’s about all from me – been on my feet too long today! Will be nice to snuggle into bed with a book
Cheers!
Maybe sell them as a set? Would mailing to U.S. be cost prohibitive? Will be looking forward to your selling them via facebook or ebay or etsy!
Hi Lisa,
When you make your chili sauce I know you use sterilized jars but are they sealed by boiling water canning? Or, does the vinegar keep it preserved without sealing? Do you have the conversion from grams to ounces?
Hi Teresa! No, I don’t do the boiling water canning part and rely on the vinegar to preserve. Although the lids do seal really well, even with my jams which are just sugar and fruit. I realise in the US there are different and fairly strict preserving laws or rules? Everything keeps for an extraordinary long time tho!
Sugar – 4.4lb Chilli – 10.5oz garlic – 3.5oz ginger 2.5oz Cider vinegar – .3 of a gallon. (You might have to look that one up (1.2 litres) there are a few options and I am not sure what is correct or what people use! Have fun. (PS don’t do double batch like I did today. The cooking part takes toooo loooooooooooong)
Thank you! I’ll definitely give the chili sauce a try. I’ll hit the local farmer’s market for some spicy chilies. Yes we do have VERY strict guides in the U.S. My mom never did the boiling water bath thing with jams or jellies and we all (5 kids) survived to adulthood! Thanks for the conversion!
Good luck with the sauce! I should add that I don’t store it in the fridge. If it gets too cold it solidifies and never comes back right.
Re canning. I have never done the boiling water thing here either!! Its usual to do when preserving fruits veggies etc but it seems like overkill to do the jams and sauces. No-one I know does it and you clearly survived and thrived! haha! 🙂
Thank you Lisa! yes we do have quite strict guidelines for canning. My mom never did all the boiling water bath for jams and jellies. It’s a wonder we all (5 kids) made it to adult hood. I’ll hit the farmer’s market and see if I can score some chilies to try your sauce recipe.
Hi Teri! I actually hadn’t thought of popping them on my ‘cloudy head-dirty feet’ facebook page! I just put them on my personal facebook wall lol
haven’t dived into Etsy because of being worried about not having enough back up stock in case people like them !! I’ll have to look at the cost to post them international just in case 🙂
Lisa all your work looks wonderful. You get sooo much accomplished ! So sorry about your beautiful tree. Know you’ll make good use of it. Hope you sell out of your hand work it is truly
