“Man-Ferns”

DSC_9784
Even though we are at water capacity, it still killed me watching that water drain out!

Well – its been a good weekend -fun and constructive!

I barrelled out of bed this morning (ok – not that early and I did crash into the doorway as I am not good at moving in straight lines until coffee, toast and one hour has gone by) anyway – had to get to the market to buy wheat for the girls before my seller sold out.

PLUS – I knew some friends would be selling man-ferns (or tree ferns as they call them on the mainland) and I was keen to finally get some.

We don’t need the temporary water-storage tanks anymore (yay) and they aren’t so pretty so it was nice to move them out of the way, where they await new homes.

DSC_9786
Now – if only I had painted big numbers on the sides we could have had a rollicking dice game happening!

Three of the four pallets we used are in surprisingly good condition! I am sure we will re-purpose them at some point

DSC_9787

And hiding in the pallets was a feast for the chickens!

DSC_9788

DSC_9798
They spent the rest of the day at the gate just in case more bulk servings of snails happened their way!!
DSC_9789
Time to get out the post hole digger!

DSC_9790

Eventually they will grow up and get nice and leafy and hide the boring tanks a bit!

DSC_9791

This is what I am aiming for:

Proper huge man fern at Dip Falls!

Well… next step was to try to sort out the mess of our path that the flood ruined.

First stop – Compost bin!

It looked quiet on top…
DSC_9793
I am totally doing something right!! Crazy worm population

DSC_9794

Jeff dug me a hole and planted the rose bush that we dug up two years ago and stuck in a barrel of water. It didn’t die!!! Insane!  I finally felt guilted into action to plant the poor thing (ok – Jeff did the planting, I just felt bad!)

DSC_9796
I bought this great pot of random bulbs for $4 at the market today!
DSC_9805
It was a delicate process to untangle!
DSC_9864
Everything looks like it is in shock! hopefully they will perk up soon!!

Also put in the pigface cuttings to hopefully grow around the rocks

DSC_9807

DSC_9863
This is starting to look a lot better!!

It did rain off and on today – got cold and hot, but it was great out there again being constructive and making plans!!

Hope your weekends were fabulous too!

Cheers

The plum blossoms look better in the blue skies!

Finally! A super stonkingly gorgeous day here today! So, on with the gardening clothes and into the vegie patch!

We got about 3/4 of the way through before bailing out because it was getting chilly working in the shade

Improvements!

DSC_9607
Winter garden haul!! The two larger potatoes were undiscovered from last season – only just put out a shoot each so they may be ok to eat. The others are actually new potatoes from self seeded plants that didn’t die over winter!!

Jeff got to chopping some wood with his new axe! Cousin Jeff showed him a better technique and now we have small wood and kindling all over the place!

DSC_9588

We filled the veranda wood box – always a good thing to do when the weather is good!

To warm up we also decided to head down the back paddock to stock up on pine cones! Pallets make a great temp. ladder for barbed wire fences!

DSC_9609

DSC_9610

Note our filthy grotty gardening clothes!! It may be better to just burn them!!

As usual… we had a bunch of curious followers on our walk back up the paddock

DSC_9626
He had to lick me – honestly after all the work we did today I couldn’t have tasted nice!

Much to Pip’s disgust, I went and dragged him out of bed, where he was buried under a doona and two blankets, for a refreshing paddock walk

We had a slight ‘Oopsie’ moment when somebody stepped in cow poo…

OK – we stepped in our share too, but we had gumboots on! Poor Pip!!

Hope your day was as fabulous as ours (minus the cow poo)

Cheers!

Spring is on our doorstep!

Back to the Garden

DSC_9539
Grotty me

I spent quite a lovely afternoon scratching about the garden. I had domestic overload yesterday, so I was pretty keen to get outside.

As I mentioned a few days back, the main vegetable patch is a bit over run and weedy and I was pretty keen to start sorting it out.

DSC_9505

I really didn’t get very far before the weather set in and got colder and damper than I was happy being – and the weeding here is pretty slow as there are so many tiny little weeds to fiddle about with!

DSC_9506
I suppose its a start!

I kept having to catch and throw chickens over the fence that were getting into the lower garden somehow! I need to revamp my fences ASAP

DSC_9513

DSC_9512
The one with the silly look on her face is the one that keeps getting into the vegetable garden!

DSC_9510

I noticed I was lacking a few chickens during the bread frenzy – I stuck my head in the coop to see 4 of them trying to lay an egg in the same nesting box! Idiots! (Two jumped down straight away before I could get the photo as they spied the bread!)

DSC_9507

Since I was already filthy, I didn’t want to quit my gardening day, so I figured clearing out the hothouse was a good move

DSC_9519

The tangle of dead tomato bush on the right bottom is a plant that has been growing for over 18 months! I had taken a lateral at the end of a season, kept it alive over winter, then replanted it in the hothouse. Amazing. (By the way I managed to kill ALL the laterals I was trying to winter this year!!)

DSC_9520

After I cleared things up, weeded and dug, I put some of the compost that we got from the local nursery around all the remaining plants.

DSC_9528
So much better

I sadly picked my last tomatoes. Now the long wait until the next season gets underway (I won’t buy shop tomatoes anymore. We just go without for a while. Too expensive for no flavour.)

DSC_9532
Last tomatoes and a chilli!
DSC_9522
Before I picked it…

I found a bag of bulbs that were desperately trying to grow! Poor things.

DSC_9524

I shoved them in the little garden behind the hothouse, so its up to them now.

Rain is Back

DSC_9452
Gutters overflowing

Glad I moved the strawberry patch – the old area got a bit swamped today!

DSC_9454

The new patch of strawberries got a decent drink from the sky all last night and pretty much all today.

DSC_9455
See the rainbow?

A short break in the weather produced a rainbow… I went a bit closer and the chooks were disappointed I had the camera and was not carrying scraps

DSC_9458

DSC_9459
I felt bad, so I returned with a container of scraps for them

I am trying not to look too closely at my forlorn vegetable garden! What a neglected mess!  I console myself that within the next month or so it will be all cleaned up and new plants will be put in to start to do their thing

DSC_9461

Still… the garden beside the house looks rather nice in the rain – I can’t wait until this area leafs-up and starts producing spring colours!

DSC_9462

Pip was in a foul mood today. He wasn’t allowed into the bedroom to sleep with Jeff (who had just come off a night-shift) and was also Mr Mega Whingy Arse because Margie had come to visit and he wasn’t getting my undivided attention!

He FURTHER disgraced himself by hissing at Margie who was trying to be nice to him! (The only other person he tends to hiss at is my mother – charming, I know – but I think its the whole jealously thing)

SO – he got ‘spoken to’ and tossed into his sleeping bag where he remained for the rest of the day!!

My embarrassing cat…

Back to my fire and crochet!! The only thing to do on a cold rainy night

A Pause in Digging

DSC_9350

Sunday!

Lazy day really – Apart from finally making up the second batch of plum jam.

I enjoyed a bit more crocheting in the comfort of the fire… This is Ruby’s shawl that I started the other day – (not quite one ball in)

DSC_9321

These are the progressions on the other two I am also doing –

I also finally took some snaps of the rocks that came back out of the tumbler – this time polished up beautifully!

Still my favourite!

It’s lovely to see a little bit more colour out in the garden – a hint of spring. I get all excited and keen to jump into the garden – then the weather will turn feral on me again – it is after all, the last month of winter, so I have to try to keep that in mind!

Anyway – here are a couple of pretties for you!

Cheers!

Strawberry Relocation Program – Done

DSC_9296

It wasn’t the sunniest day, but I was grateful for the continued lack of pouring rain – a chance to go out and finish what we started!

DSC_9298

We dug in the bridge so it was stable and relocated a few more rocks to finish the edging before mixing in the super compost we picked up at the nursery yesterday. (Mushroom compost and a fancy super rich compost mix that I can’t remember the name of!)

DSC_9299
Jeff attends to a stray weed

I am sure there are rules about which strawberry plants to use and not to use. I have never followed them. Something about only using the first runner?? Well… I have Buckley’s or none, chance of sorting out this mess as to which is what – so I just cleaned them up and picked the best

DSC_9301

DSC_9304

Jeff trotted off next door with his lawn mower to do the neighbours lawn and paddock (way to go Jeff earning some pocket-money) while I cleaned up a lot of strawberry plants!

Ta Daa!

DSC_9318

It was getting quite chilly by this point of the day! I was happy to get inside and jump under a hot shower!

There are over 100 plants in this new plot – so I have high hopes for strawberries this season – that is if I can keep the chooks away!

And I have leftovers! Will have to find homes for all of these!

DSC_9308
Homeless

Hope your weekend is going fantastically!

I say roll on spring! I am seeing the plum blossoms starting to show and I am getting REALLY keen!

Cheers!

DSC_9312

Strawberry Relocation Program

DSC_9268

We are on a roll here – three nice days in a row!!

We started out today by picking up a load of woodchip to tidy up the side garden

DSC_9265

I want to get those grass clumps from the pot to plant at the back here

DSC_9259

Best go and see what the compost has to offer…

DSC_9264
Sensational worms!

We spread a barrow load of compost here and will plant the grasses in just as soon as I extract them from their pot!

DSC_9266

We have been wanting to do something with the patch of yard out the back for quite some time – always hard to know where to start! But we drew up a couple of possibilities up and actually ‘broke ground’

We thought it was time to move the strawberries to a fresh patch. I was keen to dig them up and tidy them up, but we decided to actually make the new garden first, so I can just transplant them rather than try to keep dug up strawberries alive while I procrastinate about making a new garden!

DSC_9271

We are going to leave a small path between the current and new garden.

DSC_9273
Slow process!

We have got some rock around the property that we want to edge all these new gardens with & Cousin Jeff reckons he can source us some more rocks to play with! Cool.

Basic plot dug

Its amazing what you dig up on an old homestead! Glass and pottery abound!

DSC_9287

Random pipe unearthed

DSC_9286

Heaps of lovely big worms were also everywhere! (Chickens, being on the other side of the yard, missed out big-time today!)

DSC_9284

The plot, toward the end of the day was finally taking shape. We think we can find enough rock around the place to finish edging it tomorrow. We will then trot back off to the nursery and get a mix of topsoil and mushroom compost to top up this new garden before moving the strawberries across. Remaining compost mix to be added to the old strawberry patch which I would like to plant with pretty flowering plants.

DSC_9292
We are hobbling like ancient people tonight after all this digging and rock moving!

While looking for more rocks I remembered we had this bridge! So I extracted it from the vines that were tangled around it and brought it around to the new patch

DSC_9293

I don’t know if it will look dumb, or work – but I do want a middle gap through these gardens as I like to charge straight off the back veranda to go down the back… so we will experiment and see.

DSC_9295

So, not a bad days work! We are totally feeling it tonight every time we stand up! haha – clearly out of intense gardening practice! All this rain has got me used to sitting by the fire!

Hope you have had a fabulous day!

Cheers!

Back Into The Garden – At Last!

DSC_9213

Today was the nicest day we have had since forever!!! I promptly abandoned all my indoor plans, pulled on my gardening clothes and headed out into the sunshine (and yes- threw through two loads of laundry that almost finished drying in the sun and light breeze!)

DSC_9197

The side garden was in need of help – we have family coming to stay in about a month and plan to get the winter scruffiness under control so it all looks nice again.

DSC_9198

I dug up the struggling lemon tree and plonked it in the ground near the original compost. It can do what it likes now – it certainly wasn’t doing much good where it was!

DSC_9199

DSC_9200
Lemon tree relocated!

Pip did the Siamese thing and lounged about – he was happier sleeping on top of some clothes of mine – in this case my gardening top, so ew!

DSC_9206

Jeff worked on clearing out the twitch from around the iris as best he could… next season it will need a total dig up and clear out.

DSC_9214

This pot of grasses I planned to relocate is completely root bound! I extracted a few pieces and replanted, but will finish the job tomorrow (hopefully without the aid of a sledgehammer!!)

DSC_9218

Partway through the afternoon, Cousin Jeff dropped off another load of wood! (sob sob) 🙂 Actually this lot I will leave exactly as you see it! Its mostly under cover and it would be just wasting energy to find a place to stack it.

DSC_9219

Pip got even more comfortable…

DSC_9216

Seriously – going by the photos it doesn’t look like we did much!   I am sure it will look a million times better when we get the new load of woodchips to cover the area with (tomorrow’s job if the rain doesn’t make a reappearance)

DSC_9222

DSC_9223

Tomorrow’s main job is the ailing strawberry patch!

DSC_9220

I made a start on the strawberries and then got sidetracked by a giant slug!

DSC_9226
Apparently this is a leopard slug and is a ‘good slug’ not an ‘evil slug’ I don’t know much about them yet…

I will get onto Google tomorrow to read more about them

DSC_9233

Hope your day was full of cheerful sunshine too!

Cheers!

So Much Value in a Hothouse!

DSC_6471

Even at the end of the second month of winter, we are still getting small pickings of tomatoes – which is such a treat!

Obviously the secret is a hothouse. I can’t recommend enough if you have the space and can build some kind of structure in glass or plastic covered. There are a million ideas on pinterest for various ways and means that is fun to check out.

We were lucky – we had this dubious looking structure already on the property

Hothouse 1
I especially loved someones bespoke patch job…

Inside was quite ratty – concrete and buried rubbish, with surprisingly nice soil once we dug it all up!

Hothouse 2

hothouse 10
Inside cleared of rubbish/concrete – dug and covered in pea straw

We really really didn’t need a shade cloth covered structure, so we ripped all that off

Hothouse 13
(Of course we saved and reused the shade cloth elsewhere!
Hothouse 14
We found screwing on lengths of polypipe to secure the plastic was the best way – the polypipe hasn’t weathered and we could just cut it at whatever length easily. Better than wood beading

First side done

Hothouse 17

The back had some rotting wood in the structure so we did a bit of Dodgy Brothers Handywork and replaced a few bits

Hothouse 19

Hothouse 23

Hothouse 26
To make it easy, we just covered over the window – the eaves are all open and provide adequate ventilation along with opening the door in summer
Hothouse 36
Done

It was the end of the first summer season of living in Tasmania when we did this, so at first the hot house housed the last tomatoes as they ripened and we grew a late season crop of lettuce

Hothouse 29

We have been so happy we did this – our growing season gets extended considerably at both ends of the season.

I start seeds, seedlings, and a few hothouse tomato plants way way earlier than I could by direct outdoor planting. Very handy in a milder climate where you have a shorter summer season

And its wonderful to be getting a few salad vegies in the dead of winter!

DSC_6427
August last year!! (ie the final month of winter!)

One more month of winter to go and I will be waiting eagerly for the first signs of proper spring with the plum trees budding.

In the meantime – its back to the fire and my crochet for me!

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!!

Cheers!

Searching For Spring!

DSC_8872
Saturated!

Goodbye Yard – Hello Swamp. Or maybe quagmire. That’s a better word. Welcome to Norwich Quagmire – bring your own gumboots! 😀

I tipped another 112mm of rain out of the gauge today, bringing July’s total rainfall so far to 334mm (A bit over 13 inches!)

Last years TOTAL rainfall was only 679mm (nearly 27 inches)

So far this year we are up to 871mm (34 inches)

After living through droughts I am always resolved not to complain about beautiful rain… but I am VERY keen to see summer back this year! 🙂

Today I turned my woodpile from this –

To this –

Slightly sore arms and shoulders tonight!

In between rainfall I snooped around the yard for signs of spring (yeah – we still have a month of winter to go but I am ever hopeful)

Is it too early for daffodils?

Now – what do you reckon? Cabbage or Broccoli? Just not sure which yet… altho upon closer inspection today I am leaning towards cabbage! What do YOU reckon???  😀
