Cooking and Cleaning – An Exciting Sunday!!

Yesterdays leek – today’s soup

Didn’t pick up my Blood & Bone today, so the garden was pretty much left alone – except for a bit of foraging.

The leek and potato (and bacon) soup turned out fine – just had some chicken stock, a can of evaporated milk and some parsley – and fresh baked bread as a side! Hit the spot tonight.

I also have tomorrow nights dinner on the stove, cooking ‘part one’ of a vegetarian lasagne.

Actually feeling a bit chuffed that the majority of the ingredients that are now simmering away on the stovetop are from my garden.

I had zucchini frozen, and some corn, carrots were fresh, as was the celery and chilli. I had to buy a capsicum & onion … I wanted a couple of eggplants as well, but none in the supermarket, so did extra carrot and zucchini.

I did have to revert to tinned tomatoes but the herbs are very fresh!

I find if I make the vegetable sauce mix the day before, the flavour is much better. I will put the whole thing together tomorrow afternoon, as my sister and her family are due back tomorrow evening – in time for dinner!

In between cooking, I attended to the housework. The many beach visits, rock & shell collecting, a constant fire & Jeff whittling wood had the floor looking a bit manky! A spruce up was in order.

Yesterday afternoon was really quite lovely. As well as doing garden stuff, we slipped back down the Calder road to go back to the little forest for a walk about

Everything was still damp and gloomy among the pine trees

Looking up it wasn’t bad…

Looking down was cool too…

Hopefully tomorrow the weather will be kind enough to let me get my potatoes in!

Cheers!

A different scene compared to the last soggy day we were here!

A happy traveller through life! Right now living in NW Tasmania with a gorgeous Nurse-Husband, a fool of a Siamese Cat and several chickens. We love our fairly simple lifestyle of growing a lot of what we eat and enjoying the stunning surrounds of our little patch.

  1. Hi Lisa,
Love your posts, and can’t wait until it’s cool enough here (upstate NY) to put some soup on to simmer for the day. We have another warm week in the forecast, but thankfully, rain is included in that for today and tomorrow, much needed rain.
I’m anxious to hear if your corn sprouts. I saved seed two years ago and the germination was very poor. I’m trying it again this year.
Now, go get the bone and blood meal you need and get those potatoes.
    in.

    1. Hi Linda! Glad you are enjoying my stories from Tasmania!
I have really been enjoying ‘soup days’ Soon enough it will be all about salads!
I am so keen to see those corn seeds do something too! I am very nervous to put in a whole massive bed from saved seed and not know if it will be ok or not… I am half thinking to play it safe and just buy it again – so very keen on having a good crop this year!
😀 Yes!! Unless its a feral day tomorrow – the potatoes MUST go in!
Enjoy what is left of your warm weather!! (I’d send you some of our rain if I could… We have had enough for now I reckon!!)

  2. Lisa, I just planted my broccoli seeds from last year and only had about 5 seedlings come up. I know its always dicey to try to plant harvested seeds as opposed to bought seeds. But every year I try it because I hate to “give in” and plant commercial seeds. So I’ll start with another round of harvested broccoli seeds and maybe I’ll get 1/3 germination, then I might have enough to go in the garden. I’m in Florida so we are just starting our real season of planting. Summer is sooooo hot, very little grows successfully or isn’t’ eaten by a varmit. I wanted to wish Ruby a happy birthday. I just returned from my father’s birthday in Orlando, Fla (think Disneyworld) and he is 94, my mom is 93. In fact I was born on my Dad’s birthday and it was a double birthday!!! Happy Birthday Ruby and please tell her I love her stories and of course yours. Regards, peppergal in Florida

    1. Hi Dianne! With most things in the past I haven’t had much trouble with germination from saved seeds… haha – esp the crazy broccoli! Just a few hiccoughs so far this season.
Thats interesting to know that you are also just starting your planting!
Wow – your parents are doing amazingly well!! And happy birthday to you for the other day! Its lovely sharing a birthday (I share mine with my niece Emma!)
I will certainly pass on your birthday wishes to Ruby! Thank-you!!
