Halting the Demise of my Strawberries

Taking a moment to lay back on the grass and admire the blue sky!! Action not complete without a Siamese plonking himself on top of me!

Hiya – Midweek is upon us. Well… actually its just passed me by!

I finally stirred myself to get the strawberries netted. It was getting a bit depressing coming out to see this –

So I found all the stakes and polypipe I used last season and started to put it back together

Gotta have an action shot don’t you??

Hopefully that will now thwart the pesky birds that are taking a bite out of each strawberry that’s showing a wee bit of colour!!

Happy to put another tick on my list. (Ok if I actually WROTE a list, then I would feel good about ticking that task off)

Hope your week is going along splendidly!

Cheers!

A happy traveller through life! Right now living in NW Tasmania with a gorgeous Nurse-Husband, a fool of a Siamese Cat and several chickens. We love our fairly simple lifestyle of growing a lot of what we eat and enjoying the stunning surrounds of our little patch.

  1. Pip is a beautiful kitty. Looks like he (she?) really enjoys being outside with you. Love the way you covered your strawberries. I have been trying to find a way to put row tunnels on my raised beds. They are made of concrete blocks so I was trying to figure out how to anchor them down so they don’t blow away. I think your idea with the stakes is perfect.

    1. Thank-you re Pip. Yes, he is a ‘he’. 🙂 He is terribly lazy at times and will remain buried in bed almost all day if you let him! Because the day was so beautiful I had him out to enjoy sniffing about and running through the grass. He does enjoy outdoor time – esp if he is close to where we are working.
Glad my post came in useful for you. I love the varied uses of polypipe. My cousin built a big hothouse using the big polypipe, some heavy duty double sided tape and plastic. Was amazing. (and I want one haha) This strawberry one is really inexpensive and has worked well the past few seasons!

  2. I also enjoy seeing Pip. In my garden I have trouble with ants and pillbugs or rolly polly bugs eating holes in my strawberries. Oh and don’t forget slugs. Didn’t see birds eating them.

    1. Yes – I have pillbugs helping themselves too. I need to get a couple of bags of pine needles to mulch with – slows slugs – But I find once the season gets on a bit, the damage isnt too bad. Its like they gorge early on then get sick of them or something! 🙂
