Monday Pretties

I get excited every time I see the plum blossoms – spring so close!!

Remember a few days ago – ok maybe a week ago – when I cleared out the hothouse? I planted some cos lettuce seeds. Well.. yesterday I was thrilled to see that they had germinated already!!

Even better – this was all from seed I saved myself, so was having a doubly proud moment! 😀

And the jury is out no longer – the brassica that could have been cabbage has most definitely become a broccoli!

Isn’t it cool the way these leaves are impervious to water??? So clever how it runs off getting to the ground where the plant needs it most. I need to play about with droplets and broccoli leaves with my camera more!

I had to do a bit of searching, but I finally found some green sprouting on a raspberry cane! They seem really late compared to last season!! I have been starting to fret!

I did do manual labour today – but didn’t bother photographing it! I bagged up the remaining compost mix to free up the trailer. I am sure I will be using it up soon in the garden somewhere! The dining room table also got cleared too – yay me!

Look at this poor mess!! Amazingly, the silverbeet (chard) that I put in last November is still producing new leaves! The sometimes-pecked-by-hens broccoli is looking woebegone.

I also spied a whole lot of little happy self seeded silverbeet among the weeds and broccoli!

Which is it?? Lazy gardening or permaculture?? haha

Here is the broccoli that I picked and forgot to cook! Tomorrow night then!!

And more pretty stuff:

A happy traveller through life! Right now living in NW Tasmania with a gorgeous Nurse-Husband, a fool of a Siamese Cat and several chickens. We love our fairly simple lifestyle of growing a lot of what we eat and enjoying the stunning surrounds of our little patch.

  1. Ahhhhh!!!
    Spring!
We are winding down with summer chores here in Chattanooga!
I’ve canned green beans and garden relish this weekend!
    So fun!
Fall garden seeds are poking through the ground and we will enjoy spinach and lettuce very soon!
    I sure enjoy your photography!

    1. I really love autumn – but I am glad right now we are nearly in spring!! I am slightly tired of the short, dark, wet days!!
Its great getting stocked up for winter. Do you know I have never actually canned? Only frozen stuff or made things like sauce relish etc and that only entails sterilising the jars in the oven and washing the lids. Works fine – I don’t have the whole canning setup.
Do you have other winter vegetables in the ground? How long can you get food out of your garden in your area?
Thank-you re photography! I go a bit overboard in spring – such a feast for the eyes!

      1. It has been a terribly warm summer, most days in the high 90’s!
We have spinach and lettuce planted in the ground and seeds started in the tiny greenhouse for cabbage, broccoli, zucchini and tomatoes.
Our growing season is very long-April to November!
I love canning!! I think a lot of fruits and vegetables can be canned in the oven. I used to watch my grandmother can over a fire in a tub!
I hope you give it a try!
My picture taking skills are not up to par with your’s but I’ll give it a try and send you some, soon!

        1. Thats a lovely long season!! I have been hearing from a lot of people up the other end of the world what a hot season its been!
I may have to look further into canning sometime soon with my plans to extend the garden so much. (Altho hoping to sell excess too)(Hoping there IS excess!!)
Will totally look forward to some photos! 🙂

  2. Here in Vermont, cooler temperatures 50F right now. Makes me think of Autumn! But I am not liking long pants and socks! No matter the seasons will change and we’ll just move south and stay warm

    1. Thats so convenient – move house south!! 😀 Whereas I am looking forward to ditching the socks and long pants!!
