Paper Making Follow Up

A friend from basket weaving suggested we learn some paper making and do a workshop for fun!
So I got all enthused and tried to make paper from grass.
I actually am interested in using leaves etc, but… grass was there and handy.

At one point Dot broke into the kitchen before I got started, nicked some grass from the pot and ate it
Sigh.
Anyway – apparently I had to cook it, pulp and smash it (excellent messy fun)

I made a small deckle (pretty easy – just got some screen from local hardware shop and some cheap frames)

The grass does shrink a lot as it dries

And it looks cool even if I have no idea what I want to do with it.

(Added rocket seeds to make plantable paper)

Obviously using grass (or any other botanical) is super labor intensive… so I spent some time ripping up scrap paper and soaking it in a bucket before pureeing with my stick mixer.
Much easier.
I added some turmeric to offset the grey result. The greener paper above was from the second batch I did once the turmeric had been soaking in the water overnight.

And since I always seemed to have dried flower petals randomly about the place, I chucked those in the tub for some extra interest!

I think it will be fun to do a workshop. I am sure I have a lot to learn if I wanted to fine tune the process, but its more about having some fun, making something cool and sharing it with others.

Off to bed… here is a gratuitous kitty pic

  1. the paper museum looks awesome. Kochi has such a lovely atmosphere, judging from your adventures around the area. is there a place you’d recommend staying?
